How to commission the furniture of your dreams:
Commissioning
Commissioning furniture is an exciting and gratifying experience. It gives you a rare opportunity to own something unique that has been created for you personally. You will be involved in the creation process from your initial idea through to the finished piece. Whether you know exactly what you want, or just have an idea of size and function, I will work closely with you to help you fully realize your dreams.
First meeting
When we meet first time we will discuss the functions the furniture will fulfil, its style, scale and proportions. You may wish the design to reflect ideas from other furniture you own, or perhaps other objects or forms that interest you or your eye might be attracted to something on my website. We will also look at wood samples and discuss choice of timbers and finishes.
If the piece is to go in a specific place I would like to come and see the place. This can give me valuable information about lighting and environment that can influence the choice of design, materials and finishes.
The design
After our first meeting I will work through initial sketches to a full computer based design proposal. I will present the drawings and sometimes additional computer renderings or models for your comments, suggestions and approval. Once an agreement on design, price and materials has been reached, a deposit of 50% will be required to cover cost and materials.
The making
The timber will be carefully chosen to provide a balanced set of components whose grain and figuring will complement each other and the form of the finished piece. After roughing out the components, time is needed to allow residual stresses in the wood to settle and moisture content to achieve equilibrium before the process of accurate making can begin. This is a precise and intensive process as each piece is prepared and finished by hand.
I will keep you informed of progress and you are most welcome to visit me at the workshop to see how your commission is progressing. During this process some minor alterations to the design may be required, but any major changes will always require your approval.
